HOUSE SYSTEM
Move over Harry Potter, Hogwarts is not the only school to use a House System. It is thriving at Immaculate Conception, too.
Each fall, before sixth grade students begin the new school year, they participate in a sorting ceremony. The sixth graders gather in the gym and are soon joined by all the other middle school students. Randomly, one by one, students are asked to put on the official IC Cowboy Hat and a voice declares their house assignment for the next three years.
The middle school is composed of seven mixed grade level houses: Anthony House, Canterbury House, Gabriel House, Gaelic House, Jude House, Michael House, and William House. Each house bears a saint's name or place of origin. The house mentors chose the name, color, and logo and the students choose the house mascot. Each year the house elects a Prefect (leader) and an assistant. The leaders encourage housemates to complete challenge sheets and work as teams to complete in the monthly tasks. Students earn points for activities in which they take part. These activities can be academic, artistic, humanitarian, or just plain social. The sheets are tallied at the end of the month. The winner displays the House Cup and a banner until the next tally. At the end of the year, the house with the most points earns a special treat.
Our house system builds leadership opportunities, teamwork, and school spirit. Students take pride in their accomplishments and enjoy the experiences along the way!
