The Battle of the Books is a reading competition. A list of thirty books with various reading levels is compiled. I.C. faculty members read the books and prepare ten questions for each novel. Students from third grade through eighth grade are invited to participate. Each student is responsible for reading at least three of the books. Registration takes place in October, teams are formed in November, two team meetings are held and the actual battles begin in January. Weekly battles are held during school. Points are awarded for correct answers to questions about the books and for the name of the author. In April, the team with the most accumulated points will be recognized as the school champions. The championship team then competes against other neighborhood school teams to designate a local winner. Each school takes a turn hosting this event.
