Small Groups

All students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade participate in Literacy Centers every Tuesday and Thursday. Literacy Centers provide engaging materials that help students strengthen literacy skills. Based on performance data, students are put into small groups and rotate through 4 different centers. Each center is focused on foundational reading skills such as fluency, sight words, phonics, and reading comprehension.

Centers allow teachers to provide more one-to-one guidance and individualized feedback. They also give teachers the ability to formatively assess each individual student and use that information to differentiate classwork, target areas of need and modify group placement when needed.

While all students in grades K-3 participate in Literacy Centers, students in grades 4-8 participate in small group assignments. These can include: Reading groups, Science activities, Math in small groups based on ability and Social Studies projects. Students also work in groups during STEM Lab and Music classes.

These smaller groups allow teachers to provide more one-to-one guidance and individualized feedback just like they receive in K-3. They also give teachers the ability to formatively assess each individual student.

Students and teachers alike love Center time!
